‘Nacht van de Poëzie’ (Night of Poetry) is an annual poetry event that takes place at ‘Vredenburg’ theatre in Utrecht. We were asked to develop the overall concept and theme of the 2006 edition.
Our idea was to visualize what happens during that night using typography. At the two entrances of the theatre we installed big wooden letters that made up the words ‘poëzie’ and ‘nacht’. The letters were made to look like crates rotating lights inside, illustrating the illuminated word of the poet. On stage we placed the dutch word for night where it became a light-object that changed in colour and brightness. We flipped the letters to give the audience the feeling that they are actually inside a book of poems. The lectern on the stage is made of wood and consists of the letters UTRC, which suggests the city of Utrecht.
